Born in Yauco, Puerto Rico 1938

Carmín was born on September 29, 1938 to Gregorio Mercado and Vidalina Perez in the town of Yauco, Puerto Rico. Carmin grew up as the youngest of five children including Amelia (Melín), Raymond (Moncho), Raphael (Felo) and Israel who died at birth. Carmín attended grade school onto high school in Yauco with her siblings while being raised by both her parents and grandparents.

Our Mom

She was our Mom and she is our Angel.  She will always be missed.  She will never be forgotten.

“Where does one begin…?”

Almost 60 years of knowing one person is a long time, but never long enough! Despite the cycle of life we are gifted, from birth, infancy to childhood… teenage years to adulthood…during good times, bad times, and times of adversity and times of reconciliation, I can honestly say from my heart, my mother never stopped loving or caring for me. She was that constant cornerstone in my life.

Sandra L. McCalpin

Thank you Mom!  You were so much more than just my Mom!

Mom was my friend,  my confidant,  my teacher, my supporter and had a huge impact on my own family.

She was outspoken and feisty. She was tough but fair. She taught me so many life lessons in her unique way.

Mom was caring to a fault but no nursemaid. Right or wrong good or bad she was always there for me and my family .  If she could help you she would if she disagreed with you she would tell you.

Bryan T. Cheah

If I could describe my Mom in a few words, they would be strong, hard-headed, visionary and loving.

Strong is what I experienced the nearly 50 years that I was a part of her wonderful life and especially what she exemplified over these last few years.  Strong were her beliefs and demeanor whether it was to her children, family or her friends.

My dearest Aunt: what a blessing and privilege it was to have you as a great part of our family. How idolized you as a child. You were so kind, warm, and loving every time we get together.
There are too many memories in my life, and with my wife that we share with you, that it will take forever to write it down in this post.
Your time here with us was too short, but it was well spent, and we are so grateful that someday in the future we will see you again, and form another get together up there with the rest of the family.
We are grateful for all you did for us, and we will always remember you with love.

Mrs. Cheah was how I met her back in 1984 when I started working for Dr. Cheah as a medical assistant. As I became friends with Sandy Cheah I spent many nights at their house. Mrs. Cheah was always very generous too me and her hospitality made me feel at home. I loved her positive and beautiful smile. She reminded me of my mother, I will miss her and I will not forget her. Our Lord Jesus has her in his hands ???

The picture of Sandy and her mom (wearing the leopard print jacket while flourishing her super glorious smile) is how I will forever remember the beautiful Mrs. Cheah. And, seeing the pictures of her still getting her hair done while in the hospital gave me such joy. That was so Mrs. Cheah! I’m crying thinking of her and my mom in their fancy blinged out angel wings… most probably with a splash of leopard spots somewhere in there for good measure. And I’m sure they are happily still getting their hair done as always. Loved getting the chance to view this wonderful memorial page. Mrs. Cheah was most vibrant and lovely person. A flood of beautiful long ago memories quickly rushed back to mind making it all seem just like yesterday. Your family has always been the most welcoming, loving, and fun. I know it’s not easy to pull all your sentiments and photos together during this time, but please know that it’s very much appreciated and valued. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Sending much love.

I am saddened to hear of the passing of Mrs. Cheah. I was fortunate to know her through her daughter, Sandra. I worked for Dr. Cheah many years ago and always felt welcomed with the family. Mrs. Cheah was always a stylish, cheerful lady and took great care of her family. She was a fabulous cook as well. My heart goes out to all the family during this very difficult time.

Dear Eric, Sandy, Bryan and Carmin and Tong’s family,
Here are two snapshots from our Gourmet Group which we started in the 70’s with your parents, the Toms, Lews, Yees, Chans, and ourselves. Your mom was a great chef and cooked seafood dishes for us despite the fact that she herself was allergic to them! She did this mainly because your dad loved seafood!Sending you our love and deepest condolences in the loss of your beloved mother,

Dear, Dear Eric, Sandy, Brian and family,

Thank you for inviting us to participate in Carmin’s services today. It was very touching. It has been a very long time since we last saw her. But, we remember the many wonderful times we had together with your mom and dad not only in the Chinese Gourmet Dinner Club, but also traveling (i.e., our cruise to Tahiti), and visits to Somersby.

Please accept our heartfelt condolences, prayers and love.

HI Sandy and Family, I will forever remember you mom’s smile and laugh – she always made me feel welcome and supported. I loved her sense of style -she was so sharp – and of course, her cooking! I remember sitting at the kitchen counter for hours, sampling yummy dishes, talking and laughing! I’m so happy to have known Carmin and I will miss her, but I know that her spirit is always with us as a force of good and kindness in the world!
    All my best,
    Robin

    Carmin,
Never though in my wildest dreams I would ever visit California, either that I would ever met you and the kids. From the first day on, you took me into your home and showed me the Cheah’s way, loving and caring for me like if I was part of your family. Later on you show even more of that TLC for my son Gustavito, and for that only, I own you and the kids a big place in my heart. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you ever did for my my son and I. All the good moments will always be treasure and never forgotten. Today I say goodbye with a broken heart, and sad because I couldn’t be present to say goodbye in person.

Que Papa Dios te tenga en la Gloria.

    Gustavo
